The aim of an initial consultation is for us to meet and for me to ask some questions about your symptoms, history of psychological illness, childhood and family background, any past and recent stressful events and traumas that may be relevant, and any prior history of therapy including what has and hasn't worked for you. It is also important for me to know what are your main concerns, and goals for therapy? This will enable me to get to know you more to provide an opinion as to what may be causing your symptoms, and to recommend a treatment plan that best suits your needs.
The first session is also a great opportunity for you to get to know what working with me will feel like, to ask questions of me, and also share if there are some sensitive issues that you are not yet ready to discuss (That's ok too! there is no rush, recovery is not a race! Therapy is guided by your levels of comfort with the content being explored). The most important factor in the effectiveness of therapy is the rapport and trust you develop with your Psychologist. It is important you feel comfortable speaking openly with your therapist of choice, and that they feel like the right fit for your personality, personal preferences, and individual needs. It is also important your therapist has the training and expertise in the issues that you are requiring support with. If not, they can refer you to someone that may be more of an appropriate fit for your needs.
With this in mind it helps to prepare before your appointment key concerns, themes/goals/ideas and questions for what you would like to focus on in the first session.
